Can Gun Shops Charge Storage Fees?

In What I am frequently asked on December 21, 2010 at 12:09 am

But let’s explore this.
People get hot under the collar at the thought of being charged a storage fee when all they did was leave their guns at an FFL for repair and then forgot to pick them up in a timely manner.  What’s the big deal, right?

A firearm is not a paperclip.  It has to be accounted for, and space has to be made for it. Care has to be taken that it stays in its original condition–no dings from getting bumped, no scratches, etc.

A gun shop is not your mother’s house.  If you were charged a storage fee, it is very likely that you left your gun at the shop for an extended amount of time.  Consider thanking the gun shop for taking responsibility for your gun and pay the fee with grace.
